WAKE FOREST, N.C. (AP) – Police in North Carolina say a man was shot and killed by officers when he charged at them with a knife.

Officials say 38-year-old Alan Joseph Rushton died Saturday at WakeMed hospital in Raleigh.

A Wake Forest police department spokesman says officers responded to Rushton’s home Friday night. When they arrived, Rushton ran to the second floor of his home, displayed a large knife and barricaded himself inside a room.

Spokesman Bill Crabtree said Rushton, who is white, charged at police with the knife when they tried to arrest him. Crabtree said the officer who fired the fatal shot is also white.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, as well as another officer-involved shooting in Wake Forest in May involving an 18-year-old man fleeing from police.
