COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in western Oregon say a sheriff’s deputy responding to a call was shot and injured, and a manhunt is underway for the assailant.
The Oregonian reports that the unidentified 18-year veteran with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office is in stable condition at a hospital following the shooting just before 8 p.m. Friday in Cottage Grove, about 20 miles south of Eugene.
Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Greg Rice says in a news release that deputies were responding to a report of shots fired when they found a man armed with a gun. He says the man fired at deputies, and deputies returned fire.
The man fled on foot, and it was unclear whether he had been injured.
Authorities say he is considered armed and dangerous.
