(WFLA) – A video making the rounds on the internet might make you cringe when you see it. That’s what it was meant to do.
The public safety video was released by a company called American Traffic Solutions (ATS), which is a vendor for cities that install red light cameras.
The video is called “Worst Red Light Runners of 2015,” and was released with the hope that it will make people less likely to run a red light.
“These crashes are difficult to watch, but we want drivers to realize what could happen when someone recklessly runs a red light. Running a red light to save a little time is not worth the risk of causing a potentially deadly collision,” said ATS President David Roberts.
“Educating the public in safe driving behavior is a big part of any traffic safety program. ATS expects this video will make the public more aware of what is at stake when someone runs a red light. We encourage all drivers to obey the law and stop on red.”
ATS says that red light running crashes are the most common type of urban crash.
They have claimed an average of nearly two lives each day, from 2009 through 2013, according to the latest figures available from the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, which is an office of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
About half of those killed by red light running-related collisions are typically pedestrians, bicyclists and occupants in other vehicles who were hit by the red-light runner.
