LEWISVILLE, Ind. (CNN) – Three dogs destined to be food for a dog meat festival in Asia are now in the United States, for a second chance at life.
Daisy, Canon and Nicon, the two yellow labs and golden retriever landed safely in Indiana Sunday night.
“These dogs were supposed to be somebody’s dinner and instead they are now here in the united states and they’re going to go to great adoptive homes,” said Kathy Martin, Lucky Labs Rescue. “To pull these dogs of that conveyor belt and away from that plane was just so heartwarming. We were so elated last night just be able to save these three dogs.”
Kathy Martin and Lucky Lab Rescue work closely with a South Korean source to help as many dogs as possible.
“We don’t even begin to touch the devastation that’s going on there with these dogs. This is three dogs out of thousands and thousands of dogs that die in South Korea every year in their meat farms,” Martin said.
Martin says she first saw pictures of dog meat farms two years ago. The images stuck in her memory – inspiring her to take action.
“We have saved over 4,000 dogs and so you never get tired of this. that feeling just never leaves you and so to see these 3 dogs here with us gives us hope, gives us hope that one day this practice will end and that these dogs won’t have to suffer this cruelty,” Martin said.
But she says big change won’t happen without more help.
“The mission is for awareness. Us by ourselves we are not going to end this and so the only way that we can end this is by bringing the awareness, bringing the attention to this issue and hopefully getting other people on board to help save these dogs,” Martin said.
As for Daisy, Canon and Nicon all three are healthy, spayed and ready for a new home.
