FLINT, Mich. (AP/WOOD) — Gov. Rick Snyder has announced $2 million to help Flint replace some lead pipes within the next 30 days.
The governor’s office says the money comes in the form of a grant aimed at reimbursing the city for $2 million it paid to switch the city’s water supply back to the Detroit water system in October.
Snyder says the project will start with priority lead pipes with the help of estimates from the Lansing Board of Water and Light, which has replaced much of Lansing’s lead piping in the past. The new funding would pay for pipe replacement in several hundred homes.
The Flint City Council and the city’s chief financial officer still have to take action to receive the grant funding.
The state says it is working with the city to remove the lead lines, starting with those that have caused very high lead levels in homes or those serving homes of young children or pregnant women.
Also Thursday, the Michigan House approved $30 million to help cover residents’ water bills and an Obama adviser promised $500,000 for the city.
