BOSTON (AP) – Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld is backing fellow Republican John Kasich for president.

Weld, who served as governor from 1991-1997, describes Kasich as a born executive with “a tremendous record and results-oriented conservative leadership.” Weld says Kasich has had to balance budgets as governor of Ohio.

Kasich says he’s known Weld for many years and welcomes his support.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, who served in the Weld administration, endorsed New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie just days before the New Hampshire primary. Christie dropped out of the race after performing poorly in that contest.

Kasich is hoping to gain ground against businessman Donald Trump and senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz in more moderate states like Massachusetts, which holds its primary March 1.
