TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban was joined by state lawmakers on campus to promote proposed legislation addressing the problems of youth suicide.
Coach Saban has supported the movement for many years and hopes lawmakers will adopt the legislation for Alabama.
“And I’m here today to help the young people, this is not political for me. This is all about how can we help our youth. If we can save one person, one young person to have an opportunity in life. Because what a shame it is to lose anyone,” Saban said.
State Senator Gerald Allen says the bill was introduced today in a state senate committee. Now the proposed legislation is waiting for full senate to debate. The Jason Flatt Act could be voted on in two or three weeks. The Jason foundation president is hoping the bill becomes law soon in Alabama.

In 1997 Clark Flatt’s son took his own life.
“I know what it was like to come home that day and find my son on the floor who took my own weapon and took his life. I remember them picking him up off the floor and I never want another parent to have to go through that,” Flatt said.
Flatt has been working with Coach Saban and other lawmakers for fifteen years trying to get this legislation passed in Alabama. The bill, if passed, will make suicide awareness and prevention training mandatory for all certified public school personnel.
