(WKRG) – Terry Rawls was sentenced today to 3 years probation for a racially-charged assault that drew national attention.
Rawls pleaded guilty to beating Matthew Owens in 2012 after Owens had a confrontation with neighborhood children playing basketball in the street.
Racial slurs were exchanged and, according to testimony, Owens grabbed two knives from his home.
Later, Rawls, armed with a baseball bat, and others in the neighborhood called out Owens and beat him.
The case gained national attention when it was reported one of the assailants said “That’s justice for Trayvon.”; a reference to slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
News 5 was in the courtroom as the sentence was announced and will have more today at Noon, 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
