MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCBD) — A new study reveals more than half of all calories in the typical American diet come from ultra processed foods.
Researchers looked at dietary data from more than 9,000 people.
They found foods like soft drinks, pre-packaged snacks and baked goods, chicken nuggets and instant noodles — made up nearly 60-percent of total calorie intake.
Ultra processed foods also contributed to almost 90% of added sugar consumption.
These added sugars increase the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
