Tax deadline delayed until April 18

(WIAT) — The IRS has extended the tax deadline from its usual April 15 to April 18, according to a press release from the organization.

Normally the deadline on the 15th day in April extends to everyone that has a tax year that ends on December 31. This year, the due date was moved to the 18th as the nation observes Emancipation Day on the 15th.

The law states that if the due date is on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the next business day will be set as the new day that the forms are due. In Maine and Massachusetts, Patriots’ Day takes place on April 18, so those states must file their taxes on April 19.

Returns are considered timely if the envelope is properly addressed and postmarked by the due date, according to the release.
