ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Following his campaign rally at the Times Union Center in Albany Monday evening, Trump supporters and protesters flooded the streets. Officers on horseback kept the crowds at bay.
A man wearing a Donald Trump shirt was slammed to the ground by police. The taunting between the groups continued for hours. Some of the clashes were more personal than political.
One Trump supporter took on the protesters and said it was all in good fun.
“Just having fun; little back-and-forth,” supporter Dominick Amanatidis said. “Nothing serious. You know, they like Bernie Sanders. I don’t know what to say about that.”
Metal fences separated the two sides. One protester said he was thankful for the separation.
The rational side of the fence, here, I think has a lot more reasonable messages to portray than what we’re hearing from Trump,” protester Mark Klein said.
Clashes between the groups actually started in the afternoon.
On one side, protesters chanted. “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Donald Trump has got to go,” they said.
On the other side, Trump supporters shouted back. “Build a wall! That’s step one,” one man said.
As the crowd outside grew, so did the line inside. Eagerly waiting was first time voter Kody Skype.
“Every year, I see politicians being very politically correct, and I think when it comes down to it, that’s not what we need,” he said. “We need someone who’s going to get and say what we need to hear, and sometimes we don’t like that.”
