NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – It’s mosquito season, and one pest control company has been busy trying to fend off the insects without using chemicals.
“It’s very similar to a bird house,” said Jay Lee with Pest Entry Management.
He’s talked about bat houses, four of which he installed Thursday alone.
“This one is made out of cedar. It’s vented. it’s a three-chamber,” Lee told News 2.
He says the houses provide a natural habitat that appeals to the nocturnal animals.
“Separate chambers actually allow them to get more comfortable. If they are too hot, they can move back toward a vent or a different chamber where it’s a little more cool,” Lee explained.
Drawing the winged mammals into your yard helps keep insects out.
“This is definitely the season where they are wanting to get in there and do a little mating and eating,” added Lee.
Bats prey on insects like mosquitoes.
“They can eat up to 600 an hour,” stated Lee, adding that his house has the ability to hold up to 300 bats. “That’s anywhere between 90,000 and 300,000 mosquitoes in a nighttime.”
Bat houses can be ordered online or through companies like Pest Entry Management.
They run around $170 with installation.
The Metro Public Health Department told News 2 there are a couple of species of mosquitoes in the area, including those that carry West Nile Virus.
