WATERTOWN, New York (CNN) – A college student in New York State asked John Kasich Friday how he would help her feel safer and more secure from sexual violence, harassment and rape.
The Ohio governor and Republican presidential candidate talked about efforts in Ohio to provide support for college students facing sexual harassment and how those efforts should be extended to the rest of the country.
He also reflected on how having two daughters affects his views on the issue and offered some advice.
“It’s sad, but it’s something that I have to worry about,” said the audience member.
“Well, I would give you, I’d also give you one bit of advice — Don’t go to parties where there’s a lot of alcohol. OK? Don’t do that,” Kasich said.
The Democratic National Committee was quick to slam Kasich’s comments, saying he was “Blaming victims of sexual and domestic violence.”
Kasich’s campaign later tweeted about sexual assault, saying, “Only one person is at fault in a sexual assault, and that’s the assailant.”
