LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CNN) – Police are searching for the mother of an abandoned newborn, with his umbilical cord still attached, found in a stroller in Los Angeles.
Alex Diaz says he found the abandoned baby, his umbilical cord still attached. Diaz says he first spotted a dirty stroller covered with a blanket Monday night around 10 p.m.
The next afternoon, the stroller was still there parked near Vermont Avenue and Dana Street.
“I seen that the blanket that was right there looked a little bit too clean for the stroller. I don’t know, something in me just told me to check what was in there,” Diaz said.
Diaz says the baby sweated through his pajamas and was swaddled in blankets.
Ii checked him to see if he had a pulse because he wasn’t moving at all, and as soon as I touched him, he started moving and crying,” Diaz said.
Los Angeles police plan to scour security cameras in the area in hopes of finding the baby’s mother. Until speaking with her, police have yet to determine if she could face criminal charges.
“We’d like her to come forward and make sure she’s okay. Like to know why the baby was left there,” said Officer Sean Parker.
Los Angeles County’s safe surrender law allows a parent or guardian to surrender an infant no more than three days old with no questions asked as long as the baby shows no sign of abuse.
