AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas is starting to dry out after days of drenching storms.
Closed roads have reopened in Austin and swollen bayous around Houston have receded.
Parts of the state have been pounded by more than a foot of rain since Friday.
Authorities are crediting lessons learned from deadly spring flooding for the low number of stranded drivers and high-water rescues. They said Sunday that only about two dozen cars around Houston were towed from flooded streets. At least 2,500 vehicles were stranded around Houston after Memorial Day storms dumped heavy rains and damaged thousands of homes.
Officials also say the state’s parched ground was able to soak up a lot of water.
The rain helped firefighters contain the last of a long-simmering wildfire near Austin that had burned seven square miles and destroyed nearly 70 homes.
